This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately (in my spare time). I’ve been (finally) trying to move away from Safari’s local bookmark management into something online. I’ve never done this before because, in general, Safari bookmarks and .Mac sync has been enough for me. But now I’m curious to try.
I started by looking at a couple new-ish tools: diigo and ma.gnolia. They both seem to have advantages and disadvantages, or course. I like the interface for ma.gnolia but find that diigo seems to be a little richer and faster.
But now back to the question, because I’ve realized that there are in fact different kinds of bookmarks in my world. First, there are those sites I tend to check often, but those usually have a feed available and I’ve started using Google Reader to keep track of those. Next, there are those sites I visit often for more utilitarian purposes (banking, school registration, and the like). For these, I have found it difficult to use any online service because it’s just too many hoops to jump through and I will likely keep managing them locally (synced to other computers). Last but not least, is everything else - sites I want to save for future reference, things I just find interesting. For these, I will be using diigo primarily, but I’ve also set up diigo to save all bookmarks to ma.gnolia, which has a much better iPhone interface.
